When dealing with international disputes, transactions with overseas companies, or cases involving foreign nationals, language skills alone are not enough. A well-rounded sense of international legal systems, cultural understanding, communication styles, and a strong network with foreign attorneys are all essential. I came to realize this more deeply when I attended the 30th LAWASIA (The Law Association for Asia and the Pacific) Annual Conference held in Tokyo, Japan, back in 2017.
What is the LAWASIA Conference—A Global Legal Gathering?
LAWASIA is an international organization comprising legal professionals from over 50 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and 25 national bar associations. Each year, more than 500 participants gather for this major legal event. The 30th Annual Conference in 2017 was held in Tokyo, Japan, followed by the 31st in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
From Preparation to Presentation
At the Tokyo conference, I delivered a presentation in English during a luncheon session on the topic, “Career Options and Challenges for Young Lawyers in South Korea.” Though eight years have passed and I may no longer be considered a "young lawyer" by age, my passion remains youthful.
Attending Diverse Sessions and Building Global Networks
The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of then-Crown Prince Naruhito and his spouse. The keynote address focused on arbitration procedures. The main sessions covered critical topics including:
- International Arbitration (ISDS)
- Criminal Law (Plea Bargaining Systems)
- E-litigation and Legal Technology
- The Lives of LGBTQ+ Legal Professionals
Each session offered in-depth discussions on legal developments and institutional differences across countries. Through active Q&A sessions, we explored legal systems, career diversity, and the growing landscape of international legal services. These exchanges provided invaluable insights.
More Than Just a Conference—A Turning Point in Perspective
The four-day international event was more than a learning experience—it was a time of personal and professional growth. I actively used both English and Japanese to communicate with legal professionals from various countries and connected with about 80 colleagues. To this day, I maintain communication with some of them via social media and email, exchanging updates on our respective legal fields and issues.
International Cases Require Cultural Understanding and On-the-Ground Experience
The network and experience gained through such international events are immensely valuable in handling real-world international cases. Whether it’s an accident involving a foreign client or a dispute with a multinational company, success depends on more than just language—it hinges on cultural awareness, communication experience, and collaboration with foreign attorneys. Drawing on the insights gained at the LAWASIA conference, I have been able to respond effectively to a wide range of international matters.

LAWASIA는 아시아 태평양 지역 50여 개 국가의 법조인과 25개국 변호사협회가 모인 국제단체로, 매년 500명 이상이 참여하는 대규모 법률행사입니다. 2017년 제30회 총회는 일본 도쿄에서 열렸고, 이후 31회 총회는 캄보디아 씨엠립에서 개최되었습니다.
준비부터 발표까지
저는 도쿄에서 열리는 점심세션에서 「대한민국 청년 변호사의 진로와 도전(Career options and challenges for young lawyers in South Korea)」이라는 주제로 직접 영어 발표까지 진행하였습니다. 8년 전의 일이라 이제는 청년이라 부르기 그렇습니다만, 마음만은 청년입니다.
다양한 법률세션 참석과 글로벌 네트워킹
개회식에서는 일본 나루히토 황태자 부부가 참석했고, 중재 절차에 대한 기조연설도 있었습니다. 주요 세션에서는 ▲국제 중재(ISDS) ▲형사법(플리바게닝 제도) ▲전자소송과 IT ▲성소수자 법조인의 삶 등 각국의 법률현안과 제도적 차이를 심도 있게 논의할 수 있었습니다. 또한 발표자와 참석자 간 활발한 Q&A를 통해 각국의 변호사 제도, 진로의 다양성, 국제 법률서비스의 확장 가능성에 대해 논의하며 많은 인사이트를 얻었습니다.
단순한 행사 참가가 아닌, 삶의 방향을 다듬는 시간
4일간의 국제행사는 단순한 공부 이상의 경험이었습니다. 짧은 시간이지만 영어와 일본어를 활용하며 다양한 국가의 법조인들과 직접 소통했고, 약 80명의 법조인들과 교류하였습니다. 지금도 일부와는 SNS나 이메일로 교류하며 서로의 업무 분야와 법률 이슈에 대해 정보를 주고받고 있습니다.
국제사건, 문화이해와 현장경험이 핵심입니다
국제행사를 통해 쌓은 네트워크와 경험은 실제 국제 사건 처리에 큰 도움이 됩니다. 외국 클라이언트의 사고나 분쟁, 해외 기업과의 협상 등은 언어는 물론이고 ‘각국의 문화 이해’와 ‘소통 경험’, '외국 변호사와의 네트워크'가 핵심입니다. 저는 로아시아 총회에서 얻은 경험을 바탕으로 다양한 국제 사건을 효과적으로 대응해 오고 있습니다.
