Attending the IBA Annual Conference – A Valuable Experience on the Global Legal Stage
I. Introduction: Why I Attended the IBA Conference
From September 22 to 27, 2019, I attended the International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Conference held in COEX, Seoul. This event is the world’s largest legal conference, where lawyers, judges, bar association executives, and government officials from all over the world gather to share knowledge and build networks.
Having first attended the LAWASIA Conference in Tokyo two years earlier, this was my second international legal conference. I decided to join the IBA this time, as it was a rare chance to attend such a global event held in Korea—an opportunity that might not come again soon.
II. Daily Highlights and Global Networking
Day 1 – Opening Events and First Encounters
On the first day, I joined a joint reception hosted by AIJA (International Association of Young Lawyers), LAWASIA, and IPBA for young lawyers. There, I was able to reconnect with Thai and Indian lawyers I had previously met. After brief organizational introductions, we mingled with young lawyers from around the world during a standing reception.
Later, I attended the opening ceremony at COEX, which featured speeches by President Moon Jae-in, Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, the ICC President, and the IBA President. Cultural performances, including taekwondo and K-pop, followed. A welcome party concluded the evening, offering great networking opportunities.
Day 2 – Knowledge Sharing and Legal Tech Insights
The day began with an introductory session for first-time attendees to understand the IBA structure and effective networking strategies. This is a must-attend for newcomers.
At lunchtime, I joined an event by LUMINANCE, an AI platform supporting due diligence and document review, popular among UK law firms. In the afternoon, I had tea with an Indian lawyer and learned that local Indian courts use regional languages, while appellate and supreme courts use English.
In the evening, I attended a cocktail reception hosted by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA), where I met many Japanese lawyers and reconnected with past acquaintances.
Day 3 – Crypto Law and Hosting Duties
I attended a session on cryptocurrency where KakaoPay's CPO presented Korea’s fintech industry and its rapid growth. In the evening, during the “Korean Night” event, I helped welcome the President of the Nepal Bar Association and assisted with transportation after the event. He invited me to a human rights conference planned for March 2020 in Nepal.
Day 4 – Global Legal Trends
I attended sessions on 5G and China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Later, I participated in a cocktail reception hosted by LEGANCE, an Italian law firm, held on Sebitseom (a floating island in Seoul). Though transportation was inconvenient, the event itself was well organized.
Day 5 – Diversity and Young Lawyers' Gathering
I began the day with a breakfast session hosted by the Hong Kong Bar Association. In the evening, I attended an event jointly hosted by the IBA Young Lawyers Committee and the IBA LGBTI Law Committee. While it was labeled a young lawyers’ event, age was not a barrier to participation. Some lawyers were turned away at the venue for not pre-registering, highlighting the importance of planning ahead.
Day 6 – Rule of Law and Final Reflections
On the last day, I attended a “Rule of Law” session. I was shocked to learn that lawyers and judges are sometimes killed in the Philippines. In the afternoon, I attended a joint seminar hosted by the Korean Bar Association and the Bar Council of England and Wales. It brought back memories of working on a UK litigation case seven years earlier.
The conference ended with a closing party held at RAUM, a standing event where I shared final conversations with lawyers I had met throughout the week.
III. Practical Tips and Takeaways
The IBA Annual Conference was on a much larger scale than LAWASIA, with more sessions and events. Here are key insights and practical tips:
- Pre-registration is crucial: Some events are invitation-only or require advance registration. Plan ahead.
- Evening receptions are vital: These offer the best opportunities to build personal connections.
- Be ready for low-resource sessions: Some presentations lacked handouts or slides, making it hard to follow. Bring your own note-taking device.
- Maintain your international network: Reconnecting with lawyers from previous events can lead to future collaborations.
IV. Final Thoughts
The IBA Conference was more than just a large event—it gave me new perspectives on my legal career and reaffirmed my desire to engage internationally. Young lawyers, in particular, should seek out such opportunities, often supported by bar associations.

I. 국제 컨퍼런스의 매력, 그리고 IBA 총회 참석 배경
2019년 9월 22일부터 27일까지 서울 삼성동 코엑스에서 열린 IBA(International Bar Association, 세계변호사협회) 연차총회는 전 세계 법률가들이 모여 지식을 교류하고 네트워크를 형성하는 세계 최대 규모의 법률 컨퍼런스였습니다. 변호사, 판사, 각국 변호사협회 관계자와 정부기관 인사들까지 참여한 이 행사에 저는 부산지방변호사회의 추천을 받아 참가하게 되었습니다.
2년 전 일본 도쿄에서 열린 LAWASIA 총회 참석 이후, 다시 한 번 국제무대를 경험해보고 싶었던 저는 이번 IBA 총회가 서울에서 열리는 드문 기회라는 점에서 큰 기대를 품고 참가를 결정하였습니다.
II. 매일의 일정 속에서 쌓인 국제 교류의 발자취
1일차 – 리셉션과 개회식, 글로벌 네트워킹의 시작
첫날은 AIJA(세계청년변호사협회), LAWASIA, IPBA 등 세계 청년변호사 단체가 공동 주최한 리셉션에 참석하며 시작되었습니다. 이 자리에서는 태국, 인도 변호사들과의 재회와 함께 다양한 국가의 청년변호사들과 친목을 다졌습니다.
오후에는 문재인 대통령, 박원순 시장, IBA 회장이 참여한 화려한 개회식과 함께 K-POP 공연이 이어졌고, 저녁에는 웰컴 파티에서 참가자들과 자유롭게 교류하며 뜻깊은 시간을 보냈습니다.
2일차 – 세션과 사교 행사 속 지식과 문화의 교차
오전에는 IBA 총회 구조와 네트워킹 전략을 소개하는 세션, 오후에는 영국 AI 플랫폼 회사인 LUMINANCE의 발표를 통해 리걸테크에 대한 인사이트를 얻었습니다. 이후 인도 변호사와의 교류, JFBA(일본변호사연합회) 주최 리셉션에 참석해 일본 변호사들과의 인연도 이어갔습니다.
3일차 – 암호화폐 세션과 ‘코리안 나이트’
카카오페이 CPO가 참여한 핀테크 세션에서는 한국의 빠른 산업 성장이 주목되었습니다. 저녁에는 ‘코리안 나이트’ 행사가 열렸고, 이 자리에서 네팔변호사회 회장과의 인연으로 향후 인권 컨퍼런스 초청 제안도 받는 등 의미 있는 교류가 있었습니다.
4일차 – 국제 이슈와 법률의 만남
5G, 중국의 일대일로 관련 세션에서 글로벌 법률이슈를 살펴볼 수 있었고, LEGANCE(이탈리아 로펌) 주최의 리셉션에서는 외국 로펌의 문화도 체험할 수 있었습니다.
5일차 – 다양성과 청년변호사의 만남
홍콩변호사회의 아침 세션, IBA 청년변호사 및 LGBTI 위원회가 주최한 저녁행사 등 다양한 주제와 참여자층의 행사를 경험했습니다. 사전등록이 필요한 행사였던 만큼, 일정 관리의 중요성을 절감했습니다.
6일차 – 마무리 속에서 얻은 울림
마지막 날에는 rule of law 관련 세션에 참석하였고, 필리핀에서의 법조인 살해사건 등 충격적인 현실을 접하며 인권과 법의 역할을 되새겼습니다. 영국법정변호사회와의 공동세미나 참석 후, 클로징 파티에서는 이번 총회에서 만난 여러 변호사들과 마지막 인사를 나눌 수 있었습니다.
III. 실무적 교훈과 팁
이번 IBA 총회는 단순한 대형 행사 참가 그 이상의 의미를 지녔습니다. 특히 다음과 같은 교훈을 얻을 수 있었습니다:
- 사전등록은 필수: 일부 세션은 비공개 행사로, 초청이나 등록 없이 입장이 불가능합니다. 사전계획이 필요합니다.
- 리셉션은 기회의 장: 매일 저녁 열리는 리셉션은 인맥 형성과 정보 교류의 핵심 장소입니다. 피곤하더라도 꼭 참석하는 것이 좋습니다.
- 자료 준비 미흡에 대비: 일부 세션은 발표자료 없이 스크립트로만 진행되어 집중하기 어려운 경우가 있었습니다. 필기를 위한 노트나 태블릿을 준비하는 것이 좋습니다.
- 국제 네트워크 유지: 이전 컨퍼런스에서 만난 변호사들과의 재회는 국제 인맥의 연속성을 느끼게 해 주었고, 이는 향후 공동 프로젝트나 협업으로 이어질 수 있는 소중한 자산입니다.
IV. 마치며
IBA 총회는 단순히 '크고 화려한 행사'가 아닌, 변호사로서의 사고의 폭을 넓히고 진로를 돌아보게 하는 의미 있는 시간이었습니다. 특히 청년변호사라면 협회의 지원을 받을 수 있는 기회가 많기에, 용기 있게 도전해 보시길 권합니다.
